Rise Up: COMEDY FOR CHANGE Conference

Rise Up: COMEDY FOR CHANGE Conference

In conjunction with the 26th Annual Comedy Festival, The Onion announces Rise Up: Comedy for Change from June 2-4. With support from The Open Society Foundations, the day-and-a-half event will bring together experts, change-makers, creatives, and comedians to explore the role comedy can play in creating social and political change in an increasingly polarized world.  An opening reception will be held Friday, June 2; panels, performances, and debates will be held during the day on Saturday, June 3 and the morning of Sunday, June 4.

As part of the event, Caty Borum Chattoo, director of the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University (CMSI), will facilitate workshops for several satirists and comedians from the US and Latin America to create new comedy projects through media that will later be published on a Univision or Fusion Media Group platform later in the year. CMSI's new project, The Laughter Effect, provides insights about how comedy works to create social change.

Space at ‘Rise Up: Comedy for Change’ is limited and invitation only. For more information or to request an invitation, email riseup@fusion.net.

PATTON OSWALT

A comedian, actor, and writer, Patton Oswalt continues to find success in all areas of entertainment. From his Grammy-nominated comedy specials to his many memorable film roles and guest appearances on his favorite TV shows (including “Parks and Recreation,” for which he received a TV Critics Choice Award), Oswalt continues to choose work that inspires him and entertain audiences.

In April, Oswalt released his sixth comedy special “Talking for Clapping” (Netflix) and can currently be seen on Netflix’s new show “Lady Dynamite,” starring fellow comedian Maria Bamford, and on HBO’s “Veep.” He also recently finished shooting the big screen adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel THE CIRCLE, alongside Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega.

As a comedian, Oswalt has shot six TV specials and five critically acclaimed albums, including his Grammy-nominated special Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time which debuted in 2014. Finest Hour also received a Grammy nomination for “Best Comedy Album,” as well as a Showtime one-hour special of the same name. In 2009, Patton received his first Grammy nomination for his album My Weakness Is Strong (Warner Brothers Records) and he just won "Best Comedy Album" in 2017 for Talking For Clapping.

THE MODERN SCHOOL OF FILM with CHRISTOPHER GUEST

"Voted “Best Movie Outing” by New York Magazine, The Modern School of Film continues its In:Pictures series, where celebrated guests from the world of film, music, comedy, and culture screen and discuss clips from three films that have most-inspired their life and work.

Hosted by MSF Founder Robert Milazzo, Christopher Guest In:Pictures features select segments of three movies chosen by and discussed with Mr. Guest, as he revisits the times and the films that shaped his singular body of work.  He’ll also be taking audience questions, so sharpen those pencils.

Whether it's an awestruck Anthony Bourdain praising Goodfellas' “authenticity,” Alanis Morissette and Kristin Wiig laughing and singing along with Bridesmaids, or Salman Rushdie reflecting on sci-fi’s brightest constellation Star Wars, The Modern School of Film delivers an evening like no other. Intelligent and irreverent, stimulating and spontaneous."

'IDIOCRACY' ON 35mm with MIKE JUDGE

Acclaimed satirist Mike Judge told of an impossible future in which our collective intelligence had dropped so low it threatened to destroy the world.  In this future, America was run by a corrupt, sociopathic former pro-wrestler with severe anger management issues, and the most popular entertainment in the land was a YouTube-esque video playlist called “Ow My Balls.”

Flash forward to today.  We have now entered into the most bizarre Presidency in U.S. history. Over the past year, thousands have questioned in social media whether 'Idiocracy' was actually a documentary.  Mike Judge’s sadly prescient film has transcended its cult classic status to become a vibrant and essential facet of this new era of American culture and its deranged politics.

Following the screening, there will be a moderated discussion by Sean O’Neal from The A.V. Club and Mike Judge, and then we’ll take some questions from the audience so sharpen those pencils.

EUGENE MIRMAN & JON GLASER

Brooklyn resident Eugene Mirman escaped the clutches of Russian communism at the age of four when his family immigrated from Moscow to Lexington, MA (where along with Paul Revere and John Adams he kicked off the American revolution). He attended Hampshire College and designed his own major of Comedy – doing a one-hour standup act as his thesis (for which he was made fun of, don’t worry).

Eugene currently stars as the voice of “Gene” on Fox’s hit animated series Bob’s Burgers.  He is also known for portraying comedian/mobster Yvgeny Mirminsky on Adult Swim’s Delocated, Eugene the landlord on Flight of the Conchords, Dr. Eugene Mirman on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Eugene, the Russian foreign exchange student, on Home Movies.  He is a frequent co-host of Star Talk with Neil deGrasse Tyson and hosts the audio series Hold On with Eugene Mirman for Audible, which has featured such guests as Jim Gaffigan, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Reggie Watts.  Eugene has also appeared on Archer@Midnight, Inside Amy Schumer, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, Russell Howard’s Good News, Late Night with Seth Myers, Broad City, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and more.

Jon Glaser is an actor and writer who created, starred in, and co-wrote the TV shows Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter, Jon Glaser Loves Gear, and Delocated.  Other TV credits include Parks and Recreation, Girls, Inside Amy Schumer, Louie, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Wonder Showzen.  Film credits include Trainwreck, Be Kind Rewind, and Pootie Tang.  Cartoon voice work includes Bob's Burgers, Archer, Lucy: Daughter of the Devil, TV Funhouse, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He appeared as Video Cowboy in the ESPN web series Mayne Street, and he created, wrote, directed and starred in a series of web shorts for Comedy Central called Tiny Hands.

As a writer and consultant, Jon's credits include Inside Amy Schumer, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Dana Carvey Show, Human Giant, and Cheap Seats. He has written several stories for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in ESPN The Magazine, The Onion A.V. Club, and on-line for New York Magazine.  His first book, My Dead Dad Was In ZZ Top, was published by Harper Perennial, and he wrote and directed the music video for Bob Mould’s “Star Machine.”

CRABAPPLES with BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT & CAITLIN GILL

Bobcat Goldthwait is one of the most recognizable comedians in show business and was ranked as the 61st greatest comedian of all time by Comedy Central. You might recognize him from the Police Academy movies, but we prefer to think of him as the stand-up master—and writer/director of the cult classic Shakes The Clown. He’ll be joined here for two shows by Caitlin Gill and other surprise guests at their stand-up showcase called Crabapples.

Kamau Bell and appearances on Conan, Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, @midnight, Adam Devine’s House Party, Last Comic Standing, and Night Train with Wyatt Cenac. She has also done videos for Above Average, Refinery29, Funny or Die, Slate V, and MTV Other.

'THE ADVENTURES OF PETE & PETE' REUNION

Nickelodeon’s The Adventures Of Pete & Pete has been called the greatest children’s show ever, and it works just as well for adults. (Guest stars on the 1993-1996 series included Iggy Pop, Chris Elliott, LL Cool J, and Michael Stipe, among many others.) Join Michael Maronna and Danny Tamberelli, for one night of all-is-pipe-ness along with special guests, Endless Mike, Mr. Tastee and others from the land of Wellsville. There will be a cast and crew panel discussion moderated by The A.V. Club’s Marah Eakin, an audience Q&A, classic clips, and much more. Don’t be a blowhole! Be there for the Petes’ only Chicago appearance.

7 MINUTES IN PURGATORY with IAN ABRAMSON

Ian Abramson is from Moreno Valley, California, where he learned to walk, read, and drive, but not in that order. His stand-up has evolved into a mix of precise wordplay, longer emotionally absurd jokes, and larger conceptual pieces. In the past year, Ian has performed at the world-famous Just for Laughs Festival as part of their New Faces of Comedy, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, and the UP Comedy Club.

Ian's Seven Minutes in Purgatory is an experimental show where comedians perform to a camera in one room while the audience watches in another room, resulting in the comics having no idea of how they are doing. Chicago Magazine named Ian “Best Experimental Comedian” and also listed him in a separate article as one of the “16 Comedians You Should See This Fall.”
